Black Theater Alliance Awards Nominations for A Raisin in the Sun Cast

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to see Invictus Theatre’s superb production of A Raisin in the Sun. Sadly, the COVID-19 pandemic did not allow the production to be extended as it was necessary to close our theaters. Still, A Raisin in the Sun earned kudos from audience members and critics alike. The excellence of the cast has also been recognized by the 2020 Black Theater Alliance Awards with three nominations. Congratulations to the honorees and everyone involved in the production.

Remy Bumppo Announces 2020-2021 Season

Theater all over the world is facing major disruptions, making it difficult to plan new seasons. Still, many companies, including Remy Bumppo here in Chicago, are pressing forward. Remy Bumppo has announced its new 2020-2021 season with a theme of “The Deep Within Us,” and shows will include The Agitators, On The Exhale, and The Call Of The Wild. Remy Bumppo has not set dates for these productions, but they are working toward the goal of producing them. Visit www.remybumppo.org to stay informed about the company’s plans.

Lookingglass Streams Eastland: An Original Musical as a 24 Hour Fundraiser

Lookingglass Theatre Company will be streaming Eastland: An Original Musical for 24 hours as part of its Chicago Stories initiative and as a fundraiser for the company.

Eastland focuses on a largely-forgotten Chicago tragedy in which the SS Eastland turned on its side during what was supposed to be a Western Electric company excursion for its workers. The show goes online on Thursday, August 20th  at 5PM Central Time and will run for 24 hours. Contributions to Lookingglass are gratefully accepted during the stream. Visit lookingglasstheatre.org for more information.

The Electables by DB Comedy

Chicago’s own DB Comedy, which just might be the city’s ONLY sketch comedy troupe dedicated entirely to politics, has launched a new project: “THE ELECTABLES”:  Sketch Comedy and History for people who can’t afford HAMILTON. The Electables features original comedy sketches about American presidents interspersed with discussions between the cast and working historians.

The first episode was released this week and focused on the presidency of George Washington: I wasn’t sure what to expect, but found the interplay between comedy sketches and historical analysis to be surprisingly engaging. The show itself clocks in at around 40 minutes, making this a great companion for a workout or long-ish walk. The Electables can be streamed or downloaded on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or Stitcher and you can learn more about DB Comedy by visiting dbcomedy.com.

Wine Pairing Recommendation: Noëlla Morantin Tango Atlantico 2017

It’s easy to work up a thirst while streaming theater and comedy, which is why I’m offering a wine suggestion at the end of my reports. Noella Morantin Tango Atlantico 2017 is a sprightly blend of malbec and cabernet franc, produced with minimal intervention. If you are looking for a red to serve during these dog days of summer, Tango Atlantico is an excellent option. Sour cherries seem to dominate at first, giving way charred meat and, surprisingly, a hit of violets at the finish. This is a fantastic sipping wine, but I paired it very nicely with Middle Eastern food. I also suspect that it would be a welcome addition to your next barbeque.

Tango Atlantico can be found in Chicago at Red & White Wines in Bucktown. Red & White has been in business for over a decade, providing natural, low-intervention wines to our city. Right now, Red & White is only selling its wines online for pickup or delivery: Visit redandwhitewineschicago.com to place your order.

Playtime with Bill Turck and Kerri Kendall can be heard every Sunday from 1-3pm Central time. The show streams live on WCGORadio.com and Facebook. An archive recording is also made available for streaming at any time. In the Chicago area? WCGO is at 1590 AM and 95.9 FM on the Northside.
